The Market in the UK for Used Cars is Still Suffering
The last few years has seen a downturn in the UK’s market for used cars. At the moment there does not seem to be any end in sight with figures from last year showing an 11% decrease in Scotland in second hand motor sales. But the downturn is not just confined to Scotland, as Wales is also showing a significant decrease in used car sales to the tune of 8%, while the rest of the UK is showing a 7.1% drop. This is all bad news for those looking for good deals on used cars and those trying to sell them.
There are a few reasons why things are currently so bad in the second hand motor trade. Because the car industry in general is interrelated, anything that affects one segment will invariably have a knock-on effect on the rest of the industry. The economic downturn means that people are not purchasing new vehicles as often as they were. Because of this, there would be no reason to sell their older cars. And the lower the number of second hand cars available on the market, the higher their prices will become, which means many folk will not be able to find something they can comfortably afford.
And the ending of the government scrappage scheme hasn’t helped the industry at all, either. The scheme was ideal as it got people buying newer cars while allowing them at the same time to get rid of their older vehicles. Although the scheme didn’t contribute directly to an increase in used car numbers on the market, it did contribute and benefit the car industry as a whole.
Although times are hard economically, there can still be some great deals found; you just have to know where to dig them up from. Hopefully the coming months will see an increase in the number of people buying new cars and this will trickle down to the market for second-hand motors. There has always been downturns in the car industry, but ultimately these downturns have always reversed themselves.
When you think it’s time to look out for used cars for sale, you are always better off trying to research your vehicles beforehand. Good research lets you find only the best models available. When your research is done, you could very well end up with a great used mini or even a used mitsubishi.
