Which bass amp combo is best for you? Ashdown vs Ampeg vs TC Electronic

Speaking frankly, without a quality bass amp combo your bass is never really going to sound very good at all. Therefore it is of utmost importance that you take your time when shopping around for a bass amp combo – there are a lot of manufacturers out there who make lacklustre bass amps which sell because of their low price tags. A top quality bass amp combo is crucial to sounding good. I am going to look at 3 of the brands who do not skimp on quality of product or sound quality of their bass amps whatsoever. Ampeg, Ashdown and TC Electronic make some of the best bass amp combos on the market, lets take a look at a bass amp from each and see which is best suited for you.

Ashdown Engineering (or just Ashdown as they are commonly known) are a British amplifier manufacturer. They specialise in creating top line bass guitar amps and bass amp combos for musicians who prefer something a little bit different to the average run of the mill bass amp. Ashdown Engineering have developed and marketed themselves over the years to set themselves apart from the pack. They are now regarded as a manufacturer who specialise in creating boutique style amps. Their bass amp ranges such as ABM, Dual Tube and EVO III definitely stand out from the crowd in a music store – their look is unparalleled. Do not fear though, their style is more than backed up by their substance.

The Ashdown ABM C210T-500 EVO III Bass Combo Amplifier is one of Ashdown Engineerings most loved bass amp combos. It features the Ashdown ABM 5000 EVO III head, twinned with a pair of 10” BlueLine Drivers. This Ashdown bass amp combo contains everything a tech-head and bass purist would want in a bass amp combo, it includes 3 rotary tone controls, a sub-harmonic generator and an on-board compressor controlled by a footswitch. This is powerful bass amp combo by Ashdown, it delivers 575 watts of power from an amp that measures 23 x 24 x 13 inches. Understandably, due to its size, it is not the lightest amp and weighs in at 83 pounds – however it does have 2 handles either side to assist in moving this piece of kit from gig to gig.

Ampeg are bass amp combo specialists. In an industry where many companies try their hand at all sorts of different instruments and accessories, Ampeg stick to what they know, and that is top quality bass amp combos. Their BA-115HP model is a powerful bass amp, measuring 21 x 21 x 15.5 inches, it can deliver 220 watts of power which anyone nearby will hear… and feel! This amp is a burly thing, weighing in at 80 pounds, it is made easy to move about with handles either side, on top and wheels fixed to the bottom.

Ampeg bass amp combos are great looking bass amps. There is nothing flashy about them, they are all solid, classic-looking, tilt-back design amps. Ampeg have been used on stage by the Rolling Stones, The Clash, Fleetwood Mac and Pink Floyd to name but a few famous fans of the Ampeg brand. They are quality bass amp combos, and are the ideal choice for many bass players although they do come at a cost. The Ampeg range of bass amp combos are priced towards the higher end of the market, but you certainly get what you pay for.

TC Electronic are known for their quality of gear and instruments. Out of the three companies looked at in this blog post, they have been in the bass amp game for the shortest period of time. This does not mean they are the most inexperienced though, they have had time to create and tweak their technology and take pointers from the competition. Their first bass amp came out only a few years ago, the TC Electronic RH450 was released in 2009 to much acclaim. They have only recently released their first bass amp combo, lets take a look at it.

Due to the success of the RH450 bass amp, TC Electronic  decided to further build on the quality of the amp and integrate the RH450 in their first ever bass amp combo. TC Electronic went back to work with the feedback gained from the RH450 and created the TC Electronic ComboClassic. This bass amp combo combined the RH450 with custom TC Eminence drivers and tweeter. This combination works perfectly to create a high end bass combo that delivers 450 watts of power and includes a very clever feature called Active Power Management. What this allows you to do is turn the amp up into overdrive, allowing the ComboClassic to sound more like a tube amp. Very impressive. This is the lightest of the 3 amps, weighing in at only 60 pounds.

Whichever bass amp combo you decide to go with, you – the player, really are the winner. When it comes to buying a mid to high end bass amp combo you can not go wrong with any TC Electronic, Ashdown or Ampeg bass amp combo. This may be a bold statement but it is one I stand by. Each of these brands make varying sizes of bass amp combos, so choose a bass amp according to the size of venues you play.
