VOLKSWAGEN GOLF BLUEMOTION NAMED WHAT CAR? GREEN CAR OF THE YEAR
Volkswagen’s BlueMotion family of automobiles has won a further 3 awards – including overall Green Car of the Year – to its list of honors , this time at the What Car? Green Awards 2010 which were presented yesterday at a ceremony at Twickenham Stadium in London.
The Golf BlueMotion was named best Green Small Family Car, and also defeated eight other category winners to claim the overall Green Car of the Year award . The Passat BlueMotion snatched the Green Family Car award.
Commenting on the Golf BlueMotion, Steve Fowler, What Car?’s editor-in-chief, said: ‘The Golf is a perfectly deserving award winner: carbon dioxide emissions are a paltry 99 g/km exempting the Golf BlueMotion from road test and it consumes only a gallon to travel a distance of 74.3miles . So, as well as being outstandingly enviromental friendly , the Golf is classy, well made , practical , safe, brilliant to drive and an easy on pocket long-term investment. There surely aren’t many other virtues you need?’
Award was collected on behalf of VW was Professor Dr Stefan Gies, head of chassis development. He said: ‘Ever since the 1st BlueMotion model was introduced in 2007 our strategy for this environmental sub-brand has been to produce class-leading vehicles which are capable , sustainable, practical , comfy and competitively priced. This is what our clients require and all these charteristics are encapsulated in the Golf.’
At the heart of the Golf BlueMotion is a 1.6-litre TDI common rail engine, producing 105 PS and 250 Nm of torque from just 1,500 rpm. Its extraodinary economy is obtained through a package of systems which includes a Start/Stop system, low rolling resistance tyres, battery regeneration, revised gearing, a multifunction computer providing visual gear change advice for minimum fuel usuage and aerodynamic changes.
